Car safety is extremely important, especially when you’ve got your family along for the ride. Here in Texas, the summer months present an extra hazard for car safety – the extreme heat. With temperatures lingering in the 100+ degree range, it’s vital for moms and dads to be aware of and prepared for the dangers of high temperatures inside their vehicles.

That’s why Chevy teamed up with Safe Kids USA and blogger Sara Patterson for a quick refresher on the importance of keeping your kids safe on the road. Diana, a representative from Safe Kids USA, taught moms and dads at Allen Samuels Chevrolet about how to safely install a car seat, how to adjust the straps on car seats and gave some extra tips on how to keep kids safe during a trip. She also focused on how to teach babies how to get used to being in the car, with emphasis on how everyone should be buckled up and good-to-go before hitting the road.

Diana also emphasized the dangers of that ugly factor we talked about before – the hot temperatures. A kid’s body temperature can increase three to five times faster than an adult’s temperature, so making sure the kids stay cool is super important in the summer. Be sure to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion in kids, which include redness in the face, dizziness and nausea. If you think your little passenger might be feeling the effects of exhaustion, make sure to get your kid to a cool place and sponge cool water on his or her face to beat the heat. If worst comes to worst, remove outer clothing, and if you’re ever in doubt that everything’s not okay, make sure to call 911.

Our attendees found the special event very informative and some were even able to walk away with some cool prizes for learning how to take care of their kid co-pilots. Two expecting mothers who attended the event won a $100 gift card to Babies ‘R Us and a Chevy loaner vehicle for a week. Check out the pictures in our Flickr album to see for yourself how the event went. Thanks to all who came out!
